Synopsis:

Elle magazine interview (US)

Marion 0
Elle magazine interview (US)
Elle magazine's interview with Daniel.

What's the one thing you could find in a woman's apartment that would suggest you were incompatible?

If there were a whole shelf of vegan cookery books, then I would be in trouble.

I thought you might say a Harry Potter box set.

No, you know what? A lot of people have them. That would probably be an unfair plight to put on everyone.

You got naked in Equus, and you skinny-dip in What If. Have you always been comfortable naked?

No. I mean, I'm fairly comfortable with it. There's something to be said for getting naked onstage when you're 17. I was fucking terrified then.

Was it awkward to meet women and have them say, "Oh, I saw Equus…"?

Not particularly, no. I went out with quite a few girls at that time. I would normally follow that up with, "Oh, cool, you've seen me naked."

Is there anything you'd do differently about losing your virginity?

I'm one of the few people who seem to have had a really good first time.

Really? It all went as planned?

It was with somebody I'd gotten to know well. I'm happy to say I've had a lot better sex since then, but it wasn't as horrendously embarrassing as a lot of other people's were—like my friend who got drunk and did it with a stranger under a bridge.

Nice. You've admitted to having struggled with alcohol. Is sex better sober?

For some people sex might be better drunk, but for me—and the person I'm doing it with—it's much better sober.

You previously published some poetry under a pen name. Would you share a verse you wrote for a woman?

I was writing poetry more consistently when I was 16 to 19 or 20. In that period I would have written a lot of love poems. I have none that I want to see in print on the Internet forever. [Laughs]

What did you learn about love from your parents' marriage?

I think my mom and dad have an incredibly equal marriage. Sometimes, when I watch American dating TV shows, like The Millionaire Matchmaker

Wait, wait. You watch Millionaire Matchmaker?

My girlfriend got me into it. It's unbelievably compulsive television. I know the men on there get told nothing but wonderful things about themselves all the time. But I watch them, and I'm like, "How are you speaking to a woman like this?!"

There's a rumor circulating that you're engaged.

I'm not.

Do you believe in marriage?

I sort of go back and forth on it. It seems like the most romantic thing you can do is stand up in front of all your friends and say that you love this person.

Doesn't Zoe Kazan's character say that in What If?

Does she say exactly that in What If?

I think so.

That's weird. It's obviously become ingrained in me. But there's something fantastic about that. At the same time, the amount of stress that goes with a wedding…. I don't know. I do think of it as being in my future at some point.

What If asks an age-old question: Can men and women be friends? Where do you fall?

This is two questions that often get confused as one. Can women and men be friends? Absolutely. I have tons of women friends whom I have not had sex with nor do I have the impulse to.

What's the other question?

Can men and women who are romantically or sexually attracted to each other be friends without that ever becoming an issue? That's a lot more difficult. Ultimately, in that situation, a conversation has to happen. For me it would, because otherwise I would go insane. That's the big difference, I think, between me and my character in the film. He's able to live in this very painful land of uncertainty a lot longer than I would have been able to.

Was it awkward to meet women and have them say, "Oh, I saw Equus…"?

Not particularly, no. I went out with quite a few girls at that time. I would normally follow that up with, "Oh, cool, you've seen me naked."

He's able to live in this very painful land of uncertainty a lot longer than I would have been able to.

How long could you wait?

A few months, probably.

You worked with so many legendary British actresses on Harry Potter. Did you ever receive any particularly good advice on women from any of them?

I actually did. I was about 16, working with Imelda Staunton. I had a girlfriend, and we'd said, "Oh, we'll not do Valentine's Day. Don't do any of that." I was relaying that to Imelda, and she told me that no matter what any girl says, "just fucking do something."

What did you do for Valentine's Day that year?

I don't know. I probably wrote a poem.
This article appeared in the August 2014 issue of ELLE magazine. But we weren't done with Radcliffe yet! Click through for Mickey's extended interview, exclusive to ELLE.com.

What If celebrates The Princess Bride as a great romantic comedy. Do you have a favorite?

Arthur, the original with Dudley Moore, Liza Minnelli, and John Gielgud. The first scene in the restaurant, where he's drunk and is being a complete ass but also totally endearing at the same time? The message of that movie is really wonderful. Even though he does end up being super rich and getting the girl, the message is, Fuck it. I can be happy with you, and I know that no matter how much money I have I know I can't be happy without you. It's sort of a beautiful thing for a film to say.

Do you think technology has been good or bad for dating?

I think its kind of slightly bad for everything. Your involvement is with a screen not an actual person even if the person is communicating with you through that screen. It's like, there's no replacement for actual human interaction. I'm probably just getting massively left behind by all technology. I just use email. I have a phone. I text loads. But I'm not on a lot of social media. I'm not on Tinder and all of that but obviously I've got mates who are on it.

It's not like you can go on Tinder. Do you ever worry you're missing out?

I can see how that's incredibly exciting. But on the other hand, I can see how it's so fucking dismissive. People don't go on there looking for lasting relationships. It's for incredibly short-term relationships.

I guess there isn't a Dan Radcliffe sex tape floating around out there.

I imagine not. Yeah, no.

There must have been nights, at the height of the franchise, where you enjoyed being single.

I've always generally enjoyed being in relationships, more often than being single.

How can you tell when a woman's sincere or if she just wants to be with "Daniel Radcliffe."

I've always had a fairly good instinct for disingenuousness.

Is there some sort of telltale sign?

I guess I'm quite a geeky, nerdy guy with a very specific sense of humor. So I think it becomes quite obvious—to me at least—if I'm going to be getting on with somebody and if they're just pretending.

Is there some joke you made—or some television comedy—you were watching with your girlfriend that made you realize she understood your sense of humor?

Ben Foster was in the film—this was before myself and Erin were dating, when we had just met—and I knew we were going to be friends when we both suddenly realized out of all of his other career and work that he has done, we were mainly fan's of him from the movie Get Over It.

How do you deal with being away from your her so often? Skype can be frustrating.

It can. But I'd rather have it than not have it. I always think to myself, If we were alive 100 years ago we'd be getting one letter a year. It'd have to survive assassination attempts to get there.

You once said that it would be difficult to date an actress because they're "barking." What changed?

I was probably 18 or 19-year-old me trying to be funny in an interview and then making a sweeping generalization.

Jennifer Lawrence recently admitted she freaked out when she met you. Did you have a celebrity crush?

Kirsten Dunst. The kiss in Spider-Man was enough for a lot of young men.

Have you ever tried to replicate the upside-down kiss?

I don't know how I would do that. Hanging upside down from, like, a bar or something? I could do that.

What's the most over-the-top thing you've done for a woman?

I haven't sent a private jet for somebody. I haven't had any situation in my life dramatic enough to warrant a really big gesture. There's still time for me to parachute off the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

I saw you on Watch What Happens Live. Andy Cohen mentioned your nickname is "Hairy Otter." Has a woman ever given you a nickname?

Not one that I'm probably going to say. I can't think of anything that's as funny and inappropriate as Hairy Otter.

Guest post: The Top 5 Harry Potter Fanfics

Marion 0
Guest post: The Top 5 Harry Potter Fanfics
This is a guest post by Movellas

Accio all Harry Potter fans, we have the best fanfic lined up for you!

Seven books, seven movies and a 1,500 word update on Pottermore later and we still can’t get enough! With a loyal fandom of muggles, the Harry Potter series is still going strong, in our hearts and in our fanfiction. There is a lot of HP fanfic out there on the wide old web… so we’ve whittled down a list of our top 5 favourite Harry Potter Movellas for your personal perusement. Enjoy!

1. As It Began

Beautifully written, this story will keep you captivated from beginning til end. Snape is sent, rather than Hagrid, on Harry’s eleventh birthday to once and for all deliver Harry’s Hogwarts letter… ever wondered if one small thing had happened differently, how things could have ended up instead? Well, then…

Get reading!

2. The Hogwarts Games

What happens when you combine two of your favourite book series into one fanfic? This awesomeness. The writer has cleverly created ‘The Hogwarts Games’, a futuristic story which combines the wonderful wizarding world of Harry Potter with the grit, violence and fear of The Hunger Games series (not that HP is lacking any of that stuff!). Read on as the next generation of the Potter-Weasley clans risk the chance of becoming tributes and ultimately facing death.

Read here!

3. Arielle Potter: Book One

Snape, Snape, Severus Snape. (If you get this reference, you are hereby a legend). This pick of our favourite HP stories focuses on the complicated relationship between Snape and Arielle Potter, the daughter of James and Lily Potter. She’s basically the female version of Harry, the girl who lived. (Yes, gurl power, hurr). Watch as a beautiful and interesting relationship unfurls… it’s not what you’ll expect.

Read here my Snapers.

4. A Dance Through Thyme

There is a whole section of imaginative HP fanfiction dedicated to the Marauder’s era and this story does not disappoint. Hermione finds herself transported by a mystery wizard to the year 1977… wait, there’s a twist - she is suffering from memory loss! What is the reason for Hermione’s enforced time travel? Will she regain her memory in time to understand why she may have been sent back to 1977?

Read here to find out!

5. Lilies and a Whole Lot of Trouble

We couldn’t end this list without at least one story centred around shipping! Backtrack again to the Marauder’s era, this is the story of Lilly, Harry’s mother, as she is torn between James and Severus. Well, more leaning towards Snape and being pulled by James… but we’ll let you read on to find out!

If you want more Harry Potter fanfic, then you need to head over to Movellas, which has a whole section dedicated to HP with over 900 stories! In the meantime, we’re leaving via floo powder. Bye!
