Daniel designed Cu-bed for Demelza House

Daniel designed Cu-bed for Demelza House
Daniel designed a fantastic new Cu-Bed for Habitat's new VIP Kids range and all the royalties fromthe sale of the bed will be going straight to Daniel's favourite charity, Demelza House. The Price: £210.

"Why have one toy when you can have many? That's what I figured anyway. And it was that thought process which led to the birth of 'cu-bed'.  A very important product which can magically be twisted and re-shaped into many different forms... A den one day, a bed or barricade the next."
His creation, a Cu-bed is a kind of a soft rubik's cube that can be transformed into a bed or a barricade or a hiding-place. According to Caroline Cooren-Gleizak, Director of Communications of Habitat.:
"We asked several personalities to design the object or the piece of furniture of which they would have dreamed of as a child Additional personalities asked to participate were Kate Winslet and Buzz Aldrin, the astronaut"

The Herald Sun interview

The Herald Sun interview
The Herald Sun has an interview with Dan about Melbourne, Australia where he is going to present the AFI Awards tomorrow. This is what Dan said (and a bit about December Boys):
We just came here for a holiday a few years ago and fell in love with the place," Radcliffe, 17, said yesterday.

"We went to Sydney and Melbourne, and preferred Melbourne -- although that won't go down well with Sydney-ites," he laughed.

When talking about his post Potter film, December Boys, he had this to say:
"It does feel like a big deal and I am nervous about how it's going to be received, and I'm nervous about what people are going to say, but that's what happens," he said.

"I think people will like it and the one thing they genuinely can't say is that I'm playing Harry, 'cos it's very different."

New fan mail picture & holiday message

A new fan mail picture from Daniel with a holiday message. Daniel is going to be on a holiday until January next year. This is the message he wrote to Jenna from danradcliffe.com.

Dear Jenna
As I have now finished on HP5 and am about to take a break, I wanted you to have a copy of my new fan mail photo which will be sent out with a new newsletter from the beginning of next year. It was taken by Emma Hardy who took my photo for the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. As Christmas approaches, I would again urge my loyal fans not to send me presents but make a donation to Demelza House (which always needs support).

It has been a very exciting year for me. I had a great time making 'Order of the Phoenix' and working again with Gary OIdman, and for the first time Imelda Staunton, was simply fantastic. David Yates was an inspired director who I would walk on hot coals to work with again. As many of you know I am going on stage next year, to appear in Equus and the letters of support I have received since the announcment, from many fans have been very exciting to read. Thank you for your words of encouragement.

Later next year I will film MY BOY JACK and again am completely thrilled to be working on this fantastic and very moving script. It is going to be a very full year and I will relish every moment.Thank you Jenna for your honest and straightforward reporting of events this year - leaving the speculation to others. Thank you also for not jumping on the slightest bit of news and reporting it as fact before having it confirmed. I appreciate everything you do and know I can rely on you to present the truth to my fans without sensationalism - that is why we continue to enjoy working with you.

As I embark on projects outside the Potter franchise (DECEMBER BOYS, EXTRAS, EQUUS and MY BOY JACK) I would like to thank my loyal fans for continuing on this journey with me and following my career with interest.I hope everyone has a happy, peaceful and fun Christmas and New Year!

Much love

DAN

"I just wanted to thank all my fans for the tremendous support you have shown me in my forthcoming role of Alan Strang in Peter Shaffer's Equus. As you know, this is an incredibly powerful drama and the decision to play this part was not one taken lightly. This role will stretch me as an actor further than I can possibly imagine and I am so excited to be involved in this production and to be directed in my theatre debut by one of the most talented directors working today, Thea Sharrock. I am also delighted to be starring opposite Richard Griffiths who of course, aside from playing 'my Uncle Vernon' was just recently awarded a Tony for his performance in The History Boys. He is truly a remarkable actor and there is no one I'd rather have guide me through this unique stage experience. Thank you again, your support means the world to me".

"For the first time in over 30 years, a new production of EQUUS returns to the West End.

Alan Strang (Daniel Radcliffe) seems a normal, obedient 17-year old with a passion for horses. Then one night he blinds six horses with a hoof pick. What drove him to it? His life seems routine, his family loving, his pursuits harmless and yet he has been placed under psychiatric surveillance - an unresponsive patient who is woken each night by terrible nightmares. Only psychiatrist Martin Dysart (Richard Griffiths) seems able to grasp the answer to this psychological puzzle."

Newsweek interview

Newsweek interview
Newsweek has published their exclusive interview with Daniel online. They talked with him on set of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. You can read the full interview at this link via MSNBC. This Newsweek issue will be available on stands this Tuesday, 24th October.

Newsweek: Your character in “Equus” is a far cry from Harry. It’s a very adult role. You even have a nude scene. Do you feel you want to shake off Harry a bit?

Dan: I don’t want to shake him off, no. Part of me wants to shake up people’s perception of me, just shove me in a blender. If I’d gone into the theater and done something light and fluffy, everyone would have just gone, “Oh, that’s not particularly challenging. It doesn’t prove anything.” But this is a really challenging play, and if I can pull it off - we don’t know if I can yet - I hope people will actually stop and think, “Maybe he can something other than Harry.” Also, it’s just a pretty fabulous play.

Newsweek: Will you make the last two films?
Dan: If the script does justice to the book, it would be foolish not to do the sixth, because I think the book is so incredible and the part is so brilliant. [The seventh book has not been published yet].

Newsweek: I also assume it would be hard to walk away from Harry at this point.

Dan: Yes. I’ve come this far. If I’d stopped after the third film, someone could have come in and there would have been time for the fans to get used to him. At this stage it would be a bit harder, certainly.

To be the world’s most famous teen by Daniel Radcliffe

Marion 23 September 2006 0
To be the world’s most famous teen by Daniel Radcliffe
From Empire magazine:
“You can’t really think of yourself as the most famous child in the world. I try not to think about it, I just sort of get on with things. I don’t sit down every night and talk to myself to stop myself becoming arrogant. I would never want to be that, because I deplore those values in anyone. It’s just something you have to take in your stride. I’ll never get used to it.

With the films, I am much more aware now of what I’m doing. I think i’t partly a teenage thing, that your’e more aware of how people are seeing you, so you just want to give the best performance possible. In that respect it’s got a bit harder as the years have gone on, but it does balance out slightly, because I am now more comfortable on-set and more comfortable playing harry.

Premieres are strange. If I went to loads of the I may get used to it, but It’s always a Harry Potter premiere and they’re massive. I honestly never want to get used to that feeling of stepping out and having that reception from the crowd, because it’s an amazing thing. I imagine it’s what bands feel when they walk on stage at huge festivals and everyone applauds them before they’ve even done anything. Nobody there has seen the film, but they coome out to clap; it’s really gratifying. Your’e shut away making the film for at least 10 months, probably 11, maybe even 12. I’ts great that people come out and clap and cheer because it makes it feel even more worth while it really does. It’s unbelievable to feel that support.

There are very mild downsides, things that have become difficult to do as Harry Potter’s become more populair. During the summer I wanted to go to the reading festival, but a friend of mine mentioned that people might find out whose tent it was, and then we would be in trouble. I stayed in this local hotel, where I was told all the bands stayed. The fans have changed with the movies. The average age of the fans goes up as the films get darker. In the past couple of years Harry Potter has developed a certain cool. I don’t know quite how it’s happened, but it’s obviously great that it has. It’s an amazing thing to be part of.”

Jenna's interview with Daniel Radcliffe

Marion 7 September 2006 0
Jenna's interview with Daniel Radcliffe

Jenna from danradcliffe.com interviewed Daniel this Summer about Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, December Boys and more. Below a selection of questions.

What was it like – first romantic sequence?

It was very strange... luckily Teresa Palmer, who’s playing opposite me in that, she has actually done kissing scenes before and stuff, and she was sort of quite cool with that and would say “oh, no, no, it’s nothing to worry about”. I was quite nervous. It is very strange, but you don’t really think about it. It actually becomes like any other scene really. You sort of just… go in and you kiss… but it’s a weird kind of kiss. It just feels different from when you actually kiss someone because it’s just… because everyone’s watching and it’s quite clinical. You’ll stand with your faces like a centimeter apart and then the camera crew will tell you, “Can you move your head a little to the left”. They position you, so it is quite clinically done. It’s not in the least bit exciting or romantic like it is in real life at all as you might expect it to be. So you just sort of get in there and do it… and it was fun in the end. Me and Teresa ended up getting quite hysterical. We just sort of started laughing.

OOTP

Have you gotten to your heated, temper scenes yet?

No..no there is one scene where I do...I get to break a lot of things. It's very...with any luck it should be very, very powerful. I will actually film the scene in Dumbledore's office where he talks about Sirius and how Dumbledore's responsible for Sirius' death indirectly. We do that next Monday. I am really looking forward to that. I think it is one of the strongest scenes in the book and so I'm looking forward to doing it. And also, it's plot stuff which you need to explain what happened. It is more practical, not an emotionally-driven scene.

Most interesting scenes filmed so far...

I think anything with Umbridge. They are great because Imelda Staunton is just brilliant. She is absolutely perfect. Not only is she a brilliant actress, she is a nice and charming person to be around because she is so funny and kind and generous-spirited. She is really helpful with stuff when you're acting with her. She is very good with advice and general encouragement. Her and Gary Oldman are my two favorite people I have ever worked with.

How do you feel Harry copes with all of the tragedies he must endure in this installment?

Generally I think he copes very badly, but I think what I admire about the way he copes is he tries to cope with it on his own. He doesn't make his problems other people's problems. He just sits there and actually tries to work it out on his own. The only person he sort of really, really reaches out to is Sirius. He usually reaches out to Dumbledore, but Dumbledore is being aloof this year, which is another thing to add to his frustration.

I think he didn't deal with it very well, but I think I still have a little admiration for the way he tries to deal with it on his own...and that's a really fun and interesting part of the film...Harry trying to work his problems out, and actually having no one there to really reach out to and actually understand what he's been through.

Extras
How it all started.

"They saw me on the Jonathan Ross show and said, 'Hey, he’d be great.' And so they contacted my agent and it all sort of went from there. I agreed to do it because I was such a fan of Ricky Gervais and the series of Extras. I agreed before I had seen a script or anything. I knew the vague outline for it, but I hadn’t actually seen the dialogue and stuff. I remember I was in Australia and my dad and I had to talk to him about it because he wanted to just chat with me about it. I called him and we chatted for half an hour about the episode. It was a really great moment for me to talk to him. A couple of months later we were sent the script. It was great - and it was very, very funny. I filmed it a couple of weeks ago."

Ok, so what is this episode about, and what is the deal with the scout's uniform?

"I play a very, very warped version of myself in a scouts uniform," Daniel laughs, "because obviously they couldn’t do references to Harry Potter for legal reasons, so they had to put me in a scouts uniform. They couldn’t have me in a school outfit or anything. The scouts uniform looks absolutely ridiculous and very, very funny. I play this very obnoxious teenage boy who endlessly flirts with everybody he sees. It should be very, very funny, but there is this whole other story in the episode, which I think is also very funny."

Dan really enjoyed portraying this character. The episode took a total of two days to film.

"Oh it was great fun because it is something that is so removed from myself. It was such a departure, and a major departure from Harry. It was just really, really good fun. We wrapped at about 4 o’clock each day. We worked unbelievably fast and it was just really, really good fun. We had a good laugh and it was all really light-hearted. Joking around is what we basically did for two days. It was fantastic." I don't know about you guys, but I think he had a really, really great time filming this! *wink*

This show is not for everyone however. According to Daniel's father, it is not suitable for anyone younger than sixteen. So - parents beware. What about those who do watch it? What will Harry Potter fans think? Well - I asked Daniel this question and he said,

"If they like Ricky Gervais’ humor then they’ll like the episode, if they don’t then they won’t. Hopefully if they don’t like the episode then the next Harry Potter film will make up for it." Nothing wrong with a little humor, I always say - It's what keeps the mundane and tragic a little less in-your-face.

Dan about My Boy Jack

Marion 27 August 2006 0
Dan about My Boy Jack
It was announced at the Edinburgh International Television Festival that Daniel will star in My Boy Jack. Daniel :
For many people my age, the first world war is just a topic in a history book. But, I've always been fascinated by the subject and think its as relevant today as it ever was with young men all over the world still sacrificing their lives in the name of war."
"I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like in the trenches, living amongst the stench of death and knowing that at any moment it may be your last. But, I think its important we try to imagine the horrors these young men experienced and to never forget them."

"I am extremely proud to be part of the production of My Boy Jack and only hope I can do justice to the memory of the men who fought and those who died."
He also had to say something about the production of the film (a video was shown during the press conference at the Festival):
"I'm Dan Radcliffe, and I'd like to tell you about a film I am making next year for ITV1. In World War I, millions of young men were killed fighting for their country - many were only 17 years old.

It's a period I am particularly fascinated by, which is why I was thrilled to be asked by Ecosse Films to play the title role in a major new drama called My Boy Jack. The film is about Rudyard Kipling and his son. Kipling was one of several high profile figures who took an active role in persuading young men to fight in World War I.

His own son Jack, however, had such poor eyesight that the army refused to accept him. Indeed, it was only through Kipling's personal intervention that Jack eventually gained a commission with the Irish guards.

Written by and starring David Haig as Kipling, My Boy Jack is a moving and powerful story NOT ONLY of duty, sacrifice and bravery, but also the horror of war.

Today nearly a hundred years on YOUNG MEN ARE STILL GOING OFF TO FIGHT IN WAR. MANY WILL NEVER RETURN.

In My Boy Jack next year, we will remember them.

The message:

Dear Page

Apologies for the delay in sending this but it has been a busy week (as I am sure you know!) A big thank you to you and all my fans who sent me so many kind wishes on my birthday. I had a very quiet day at home and then in the evening traveled to Oxford for a few days filming.

I am once again thrilled that, through your website, so much money has been raised for Demelza House. This is simply fantastic and I thank each and everyone of you for your kindness and generosity. I am delighted that you have decided to make donations to Demelza House rather than sending me
presents. I think the kaleidoscope idea is brilliant and can't wait to see the finished project before it goes to Demelza House.

Thank you once again.

Much love to you all.

Daniel Radcliffe to star in stage play Equus

Daniel Radcliffe to star in stage play Equus

Daniel will star in the play Equus.Website danradcliffe.co.uk shares exclusive details. The play will be performed in London's West End Theatre District next Spring, 2007. Daniel will portray the role of Alan Strang and he will begin rehearsing for the role in January 2007.

The production is directed by Thea Sharrock and it will also star fellow actor, Richard Griffiths (Vernon Dursley) as Psychiatrist, Martin Dysart.

Daniel forwarded them this message:

"I'm really excited to be part of this production. I'm thrilled to be working with Richard Griffiths again. This is obviously a huge departure for me as an actor, but Equus is such an amazing play that this really was an opportunity not to be missed.

Rehearsal starts in January and I'm very much looking forward to working with Thea Sharrock who is an incredibly talented Director and only hope I do the role justice!"

The play was originally performed in 1973 by the National Theatre in London. It is a story of a psychiatrist who attempts to treat a young teenage man's pathological fascination with horses. It was an inspiration born out of a crime involving a teenage boy's senseless injury to horses which blinded them. The play received a Tony Award for best play in 1975.

Harry Potter made an appearance after this…sort of. A quick video clip of Daniel Radcliffe (who plays Harry) speaking from the set of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” (Trelawney's classroom) was shown. For fans who are interested, his hair appears to be the shortest it’s ever been for this film. Daniel said the movie is going great, and said that he was sure audiences were curious about the kiss Harry Potter receives in the movie. He then went on to say, “Well, the kiss is…”

Unfortunately, the director, David Yates, then appeared and started talking about the movie as well. He mentioned that Hagrid’s giant brother Grawp will be in the film, as well as Dolores Umbridge, whom the director described as “a cross between Doris Day and Freddy Krueger.”

Yates then addressed the issue of the kiss as well, saying “Oh, the kiss? It’s…” A production assistant interrupted and said they were both needed on the set. They quickly said goodbye and left, smiling as they left the audience wondering about that darn kiss.

Via movieweb.com:
Daniel talked about working on this film, “It’s fantastic; it’s such a blast being on set.” David gave out some info about Professor Umbridge, played by Imelda Staunton. “She’s a cross between Doris Day and Freddy Krueger,” he said. They’re also going to add some new creatures for this fifth version of the Harry Potter series; “We’re also bringing in these half-men/half-horse characters to the mix, that are wonderful.”

The Harry Potter segment begins with an owl delivering a letter to the Gryffindor Common Room at Hogwarts. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley enter in the midst of Hermione complaining about an (unheard) joke not making sense. Spying the owl and its letter, they open the correspondence.

Although Ron thinks the letter comes from the Minister for Magic, Hermione realizes it actually comes from the Muggle Prime Minister. Addressed to "whomever it may concern - as long as they can use magic", the letter reports on the Queen's handbag being stolen. Ron jokes that "Voldemort's getting really inventive." The letter stresses the urgency of retrieving the handbag as it contains Her Majesty's reading glasses, which she needs in order to read her speech at her 80th birthday celebration.

Harry remarks that Peeves was using the birthday as an excuse to drop coloured eggs on people at breakfast. Harry suggests veritaserum could be used to make the thieves confess, but Hermione points out they do not know who the thief is yet. Harry unsuccessfully tries the Summoning Charm to conjure up the lost handbag. Unable to do it himself, Ron joins him and together they do the charm again -- only to have a pile of different lost handbags appear on the table. Thinking one of them must be the Queen's the trio begins searching through the bags. Neville Longbottom arrives and spots his grandmother's handbag among the litter (Ron asks him if his gran happens to be the Queen). Hermione says none of the bags is the Queen's, because they're too far away from Buckingham Palace for the accio charm to work. Ron sticks his hand in Neville's Gran's bag and gets a mousetrap on his fingers as a result. Hermione gets an idea and grabs a quill and parchment. She writes a letter which provides the Palace with a temporary transference of magical power (presumably so they can use the Accio charm themselves). They send the owl back to Buckingham Palace with Hermione's letter. (The Queen subsequently receives her handbag back.)

Daniel's 17th birthday message

Jenna from danradcliffe.com received the following message from Daniel regarding his upcoming 17th birthday.

Back then this site didn't excist. I decided to add 'archive news' like this as much as possible. I thought it might be interesting to read for you all

As my 17th birthday approaches (!), I would like to appeal to my wonderful fans and ask that instead of sending me presents, they might like to make a donation, however small, to Demelza House. It really makes a huge difference to this remarkable place which I have supported for several years and I am very touched that so many fans have already taken such an active interest by donating or fund raising. Thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity.

Update: From his June 2006 newsletter:

"As many of you know, my birthday wish as indicated on the danradcliffe.com and danradcliffe.co.uk websites is that instead of fans sending me a gift (which I do appreciate) they may like to make a donation to Demelza House, the children's hospice I have supported for several years. It really does make a difference to this special place. I am aware that some people like to do both - please don't - it makes me feel bad that you are spending money on me when it could be going to a much worthier place - or treat yourself! It is also impossible for me to acknowledge individual gifts now, due to the sheer volume of fanmail. I do hope you understand."
