Clarin Journal interview (Argentina)
Thanks to Maripy from Glowing Radcliffe for sending over the translation from the interview from the Clarin Journal (10th July 2011, Argentina) which you can read below and has some great facts. View the scans here.

Now that your job is done. What does Harry Potter mean to you?
Harry Potter made me. I owe him everything. It doesn’t matter what I’ll do in the future, each job will relate to Harry Potter. It is weird because many actors didn’t have the luck to play an action hero like I did, and I had so much fun. I’ll miss Harry because I know after him there will be lots of things I won’t be doing again. What kind of things? For example, what I did in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, jump out of the water in the cave surrounded by a huge ring of fire. But I think what I’ll miss the most are those 10 years on set with these amazing people. I love them, they are my best friends and I am already missing them a lot. I spent my teenage years there and made friends that will last forever. I grew up in the set. I grew up with Harry.

Who will you miss the most?
Michael Gambon, Gary Oldman, Emma Watson, Tom Felton… I won’t stop seeing them but it won’t be that easy because, for example, Gary Oldman lives in the US. I dined with him when I went to Los Angeles, but it was really brief and I miss him. David Thelwis, who’s brilliant, I’ll miss him too. All of them are great actors, they do as much as they can to cheer up the set. They are good people, they talk to everybody..

Did you learn from them as an actor?
Yes, but I also learned how you have to behave on set and how you have to talk to all the people working there.

How will you manage your professional life after Harry Potter?
I feel this is the time to show people I can do other stuff. I also want to do to other things. If I stop working after Harry Potter it will be easy for them to say I didn’t take it serious. And I want to show them that actually I am serious about acting.

But you have done other films before Harry Potter…
Yes, absolutely. But now Potter is over and we’re all really conscious about it, people will want to know what I’m going to do and it is important for them to see me moving on and working.

It is said you didn’t like your performance in Half Blood Prince. Why did you think so?
When I saw the sixth movie I felt like I was acting with just one side and could have had many others. It bugged me, a lot... But that was good because I realized that and improved in the seventh film. I’m really critic of what I do and how I do it. I had a long conversation with Alan Rickman about it and he told me when you think you do everything good that’s when you should stop acting. Auto criticism is necessary because without her you can’t improve.

What made you chose this acting career when you were 10 years old?
Nothing at all. I wasn’t really good in academics and Sue Latimer, who was already working with actors as an agent and then became my agent, talked to my parents. My dad and her have been friend for like 30 years, I think they went together to Drama school. My parents told Sue about my issues with school and she told them “why don’t you send him to the David Copperfield casting for IV?” No one expected I could make it because I had never acted before, I didn’t even show any kind of interest on acting. I went to the audition and I got it, and that’s how it all started. At the age of 14 I thought “yes, this is what I want to do.”

What do you like the most about working on films?
The fact you’re part of something that touches people. That’s exciting. I don’t work for parties and glamour, I prefer the work and sweat on the set. The premiers come after, and they are always hard but they give me the chance to interact with fans. And the fans keep surprising me.

You started working really young, did that make you more mature than other people of your age?
I don’t know if right now I’m more grown up than other guys in their 20s. But I was more mature when I was 15. I think time worked on it and made us even. I was surrounded by adults all the time and you grow up really fast in that situation.

How do you manage your fame and fortune being so young?
I ignore my fortune, I don’t think about that. I have a lovely flat and I’m really happy with it. Money can give you some space to maneuver, but it doesn’t have to be your goal in life. I grew up with that idea. About fame, you just have to be surrounded by sane and good people. I have my mom, dad and Sue Latimer and if I get cocky they will stop me. If you’re surrounded by people who love you and not the ones that tell you what you want to hear, it’s okay.

You’re really famous and you may lose some privacy. How do you live with that inability of living without the press following you?
There are times I think “it’d be awesome if the paparazzi didn’t go to my parents’ house,” but to be honest lots of celebrities are photographed by papz in that situation because they go to the wrong places, I mean, when the paparazzi are or just because they let them know they are going. I used to say, and I keep saying it sometimes, I feel famous once a month, and that’s when a Harry Potter movie was released, when I am interviewed and I see myself doing that. Then I continue with my life. Besides I have my friends who don’t see me as “Dan the famous,” more like “Dan the ass.”

Do you still write poetry?
Not so often, but what I write now is way better than before. The first year I wrote I made around 60 poems and 20 were terrible. Now I write two pages and say “it’s rubbish” and start again. I read a lot too, that helps me to improve my writing. I love reading and I have a huge imagination –my English teacher told me that- and I really want to use it. The thing is I need to find the time and something that inspires me, I suppose. I’m still waiting for that idea, and who knows, maybe I’ll have to wait 40 years, but I’ll write.

Would you like to direct films too?
Absolutely. That’s my ambition, it’s always attracted me but I didn’t know I had what it takes until a few months ago in the last Harry Potter movie. I think every director has to see himself as the captainship and treat everyone with respect. If people are respected they work better. But to be able to direct films I need to learn about cameras and lenses and filter… I have to learn about all that but I’d love to be a movie maker

Daniel Radcliffe Birthday Project 2011 update: It's on it's way!
So.. people.. here the promised update regarding the Birthday Project 2011 which I arranged together with partnersite DanielRadcliffe.de this year. The t-shirt is now on it's way! And I know Mira from DR.de also has posted her package yesterday and actually after his B-Day I know! xD It also takes some time also anyway for Daniel to receive it, so I don't expect an answer really soon also because he is still in NY at the moment and not in London.

I have taken some photos of the t-shirt so you all can get an idea about how it looks with all the words included. (I tried to make the first part like you read an encyclopedia, thought that was quite original)You can see those at the projects page which I have updated. Then now I can only say a HUGE thanks to everyone who has joined, and now we just wait:)

Interview: Inquirer Dan talks "How to Succeed", Deathly Hallows part 2 premiere and more
Dan has talked with the Inquirer and talked about his life after Harry Potter, How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying and more which you can read below.

How did you acquire that incredible voice?
I can assure you that it’s not an incredible voice. It’s a solid voice, one that gets me through eight shows a week safely and comfortably. But there are a lot of bigger singers than me … I’ve always enjoyed music. I’ve always sung along and stuff, so I suppose I’ve always had a kind of musical inclination in that sense. Three years ago, I started having singing lessons. I just loved it. My singing teacher is a great guy in England named Mark Meylan. He’s very funny and dry.

Were you able to reach those notes right away?
No. That has been worked on across the three years. My range got slightly bigger. But I’m not quite Freddie Mercury yet.

That was an energetic performance. How do you unwind?
I go home and watch the History Channel or something. Nothing particularly interesting. Now that we’re more into the run, I’m less buzzing after each show. In the beginning, I would go home and I couldn’t sleep for like two or three hours. But now, I’m able to rest afterward.

Aside from the singing lessons, how else did you train for this marathon role?

I started doing dance lessons at the beginning of last year. When I wasn’t doing “Potter,” I did three hours (of dancing) on weekends. I was doing it every week for 12 months. The course gets you slightly more in shape. But it wasn’t until the rehearsals when you get the specific choreography of the show into your body. Eventually, you relax with it. Then it becomes less of a workout. I can now do “Brotherhood of Man” without getting totally out of breath and having to struggle in the next scene.
Sean Connery was very much identified with James Bond that he wasn’t able to break the mold for a long time. Your “Harry Potter” role could have easily been an albatross. Yet from “Equus” to this musical, you are able to break audience expectations of what you’re capable of doing. What has been more vulnerable to you, being physically naked in “Equus” or singing and dancing in this show? “Equus” is a lot darker material so I felt definitely much more vulnerable there. But in terms of the Sean Connery thing, he did rather well in those James Bond movies and went on to greater things. But I think it’s also a different world now than it was then. In the ’60s and ’70s, you only saw the character. There wasn’t much awareness of the actor behind the character as there is now because you didn’t see them in the tabloids and magazines all the time.

Now, people are more used to dealing with that kind of dual reality of the character and the actor being separate things. Maybe it’s an easier time to try and break out of a big series and go on to different characters.

How is your bonding experience with the cast in “How to …” different from “Harry Potter”?
When I do film or TV, the biggest bond I have is normally with the crew. Because, particularly in the case of “Potter,” I was the only one who was there every day. Even Emma (Watson) and Rupert (Grint) were often not there. So the crew are the people I gravitated toward and hung out with.
In this show (“How to…”) it’s a different experience that you have of being in a cast. Because you really do rely so heavily on each other. You help each other out and be there for each other when stuff goes wrong. There’s a real company feel. We have a really great company. And that applies to not just the cast but also the crew backstage who are just as hardworking and happy to be here. But going though the rehearsal process, at certain times you’re all slightly vulnerable, messed up and thinking that you don’t belong there. You see each other through that phase which is lovely.

You left New York to attend the recent London premiere and then flew back here immediately.
Yeah, it was a great day. It sounds too cold and clinical to say “on autopilot” but it was almost like I was watching it all happen to somebody else. It was slightly kind of odd. I couldn’t believe that I was suddenly back here and was about to do the show again after I’d been in London. It was kind of bizarre. It was one of those things that I suppose tests the stamina. It’s nice to be reminded that you can do it.

Over the years, you’ve said in our interviews that you have a relatively normal life. You go to a “Harry Potter” premiere once a year. The fans scream and you wave. Here, that happens every night. The fans are outside, screaming and waiting for you to come out. How have you adjusted to this?
It’s not something that you get particularly adjusted to. It’s always something that makes you feel slightly awkward. You’re like, if you really hear me, I promise you won’t be screaming. There’s nothing to get that excited about. It’s all very surreal. The people scream and get so excited. Again, it’s a similar thing – it’s like it’s happening to somebody else. After a while, you tend to almost not hear it. It’s quite strange.

How long are you committed to doing the show?
Until next January.

Since the final “Harry Potter” movie’s box-office record is
a worldwide phenomenon, have you noticed anything different in the audience reaction during the show?
It’s interesting because at the moment, I imagine that what people will be doing is going from the film to the show. This show isn’t a “Harry Potter” thing but obviously, I’m here. There have been moments when people have been a bit more excited than usual. Somebody did call something out last Saturday night. But generally speaking, once the announcements have been made about no cell phones and no photography, everyone tends to chill out a little bit. But on the Saturday after the film was released, it was pretty hectic at the stage door.

You had the Harry Potter role for many years. These days, when you wake up in the morning, is that Harry Potter identity still in your mind?
It’s part of my identity in the fact that it was my first big job. But it’s not something that I wake up saying to myself. I’m fully aware that I’m not him. I suppose the truthful answer is, I don’t think about it that often. Although “Harry Potter” is responsible for almost everything in my day-to-day life – from my job to where I live – it’s not something that comes into my head all the time.

Would you like to do another musical? Which do you like the most?
I would absolutely love to do another one. I’d love to do a new musical as well. That would be very exciting. My favorite musical, despite the fact that I’ve never actually seen it live – I’ve only seen recordings and listened to the cast album – is Sondheim’s “Company.”

AP interview: Without Harry Potter.. where would you have been?
Yahoo has a new interview online (from AP, Associated Press) where they talk with the trio about where they would have been/what they would do when Harry Potter wouldn't have come on their way.. and here is what Daniel said about that..:
"What probably would have happened, when I got to about 17, 18, and it became apparent, as it would have done, to my parents that I wasn't going to be going to university, I'm sure they probably would have tried to get me, like, an internship on a film as a runner. And then I'd just try to work my way up the A.D. ladder from there," said Radcliffe, whose pre-"Harry Potter" acting work included the title role in a British television production of "David Copperfield."

"To this day, I still fancy myself as a bit of an A.D. Anyone who works with me will tell you if they give me a radio, I constantly kind of try to run messages between people, that I always like to know exactly what's going on around the set. So if somebody's saying, 'Where's so and so? We need them now,' I can go, 'They're there. That person's coming back. They've just gone to the toilet.' I really like to know exactly what's going on at all times on set, because I like to feel that's another way in which I can make myself useful."

IndieLondon's interview with Daniel Radcliffe

12 July 2011 0
IndieLondon's interview with Daniel Radcliffe
IndieLondon's interview with Daniel in promotion of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2. Daniel spoke to journalists in London via a satellite link from New York ahead of the film’s world premiere.

Q. What is your overriding emotion right now with the end of Harry Potter?
Daniel Radcliffe: It’s hard to say. But I’m so proud of this [final] film. I think of it as being light years ahead of any of the other films in the series and I find it amazing that we shot Part 1 and Part 2 at the same time because I think Part 2 is such a different film from Part 1. Part 1 was great but I think this one’s the best film we’ve ever made, so I’m just so thrilled that we’re going out on this positive note.

Q. What are you going to miss the most?
Daniel Radcliffe: I suppose the thing I’ll miss most is the crew, really, and the cast as well. But the crew rate among some of my best friends in the world. We worked together for so long. I’m sure some of us will continue to work together throughout our careers but we won’t ever be together as that unit we were then. So, I’ll miss that a lot. I’ll also miss getting to do some of the stuff that I get to do as Harry. I mean, I’m not naturally… I don’t think I have the frame and stature of an action hero, so it’s kind of a gift for a young actor to be able to do all that stuff… you know, I got to do a 40ft freefall down a roof when I was 15 and all the water stuff – bursting out of the water surrounded by a ring of fire. I will never get to do that again. So, I’ll miss some of the opportunities that playing Harry brought me.

Q. You’ve grown up physically and as an actor on-screen, so when you look back and watch yourself, especially to the first couple of movies and see little you, what do you think?
Daniel Radcliffe: It’s very strange… we did a screening of the film over here [in New York] and I invited a lot of people from the [Broadway] show to come and see it and it was kind of merciless, the fact that when all these images of me as a little kid came up, they all went: “Aaahhh…” This was 60 of my quite good friends [laughs]. So, it’s very, very strange and it kind of is sad because I’m not that little person, or that lovely little thing anymore, but it’s sort of just nostalgic and weird.
But I’m very proud to have grown up with it and also, when I look at those first films, we had no idea what we were doing. And that applies to all of us to a certain extent. I mean, if you look at the visual effects, just the jump between 1 and 2 involving the visual effects is huge! We were kind of all finding our feet – the cast and the director, Chris Columbus, was landed with what was potentially the biggest film franchise in the world and he had to start it all off. It wasn’t an easy job but he did a fantastic job of it. So, it’s just very peculiar when you see photos of yourself and look at yourself at that age. I’m sure I’ll be learning to live with it for a long time. I’m sure I’ll see those for some time.

Q. The final film is fantastic…
Daniel Radcliffe: It is, isn’t it! I’m just so happy with it. When Hogwarts starts coming to life… I was there and I saw it. But those shots are the least interesting to film, when you just have this empty space, and then suddenly you have those suits of armour, those knights, clattering to the ground and coming to life, I was just: “Yes!” I was so excited by it.

Q. Was it an emotional experience watching it?
Daniel Radcliffe: Yeah, it was… and not just because it’s the last film in the series but also because it is so emotional. The performance I found the most moving was Alan Rickman. I’ve said this in interviews a lot and I’ll keep saying it but I do think it’s the film performance of his career. I think he should get nominations for best supporting actor because it’s so touching and heart-wrenching and beautiful what he does. I’m really thrilled to have shared the screen with him.

Q. To me, one of the most powerful scenes is when you, Ron and Hermione are standing on that bridge and the camera pulls out. Are you going to miss your co-stars and being part of that Potter holy trinity?
Daniel Radcliffe: Yes, absolutely, very, very much! I mean, we’ve spent 10 years of our lives with each other and it’s been an amazing privilege to watch them both grow up and change and develop so much as actors. We all have. But not just Rupert [Grint] and Emma [Watson] but people like Tom Felton and Matthew Rhys, who comes into his own in this film, and shows us all what he’s always been capable of. We’ve all grown up so much and we’ve all learnt by doing and being around each other, so we fed off each other all the time – our enthusiasm and our shared knowledge that we were learning as we were going along. So, I mean it’s been incredibly special. And I do think the bond between me, Rupert and Emma is pretty unbreakable because I don’t think anyone knows what it’s like to go through this craziness. I’ll miss them very, very much but hopefully we’ll find other projects to work together on.

Q. We have a room full of press behind this camera who have followed you all through these films, so do you have a message for them?
Daniel Radcliffe: Yes, I do. Thank you very, very much for interviewing me for the last 10 years. I hope that I managed to say something at least halfway interesting to most of you across that time. And I hope to continue to do other films, so come and interview me for them as well… that would be great!

Seventeen magazine caught up with Daniel at Trevor LIVE! in New York, where he was presented with the Hero Award, to discuss his move to the US, the Trevor Project, and Pottermore.

17: How are you going to prepare for the premiere of the last film?
Daniel Radcliffe: I'm planning on trying to be as mellow and calm as I possibly can be, amidst what will be ultimate madness.
17: What do you think about Pottermore?
DR: I barely know what it is! I understand it's a way to replay the books on the Internet. I haven't done it. I doubt I will be doing it, but I'm sure it will help with the transition for a lot of people that will be in mourning.
17: You've said you'd never live anywhere other than England? Is that still true, now that you've been in New York for a while?
DR: England is my home. London is my home. New York feels like, if I have to spend a year living in an unfamiliar city, this is a pretty lovely one to spend a year in, but I will be going home at the end of it, certainly.
17: What does working with the Trevor Project mean to you?
DR: Out of everything I've done in my career, it's what I'm most proud of. It's something that I'm passionate about and have been from quite a young age. The fact that I'm able to make a difference is a source of great pride to me.
